I think you can then move this toward an economic lesson looking at how products have changed and made life faster and easier.

Title: Tire
Grade Level: Middle
Short Answer:
I would make them think of something that is scarce and then think about how to ration it. I would try to put them in the shoes and the time of WWII. Maybe giving them something small but they still had to use daily and come up with a plan on how to use it.

I think its also important for them to understand how rations worked and how everyone was united for the good of the country.

Title: Virginia Split
Grade Level: Middle
Short Answer:
I think analyzing the Civil War but focusing in on the split of Virginia into two separate states would be good. YOu can talk about boundaries and the need for change but also talk about Slavery and how it was different for the two sides based on the land. One side had large planations and the other had small farms so the land dictated the cultural differences

Title: Evolution
Grade Level: Middle
Short Answer:
Soemtimes things have to line up on the front end and the back end to be successful. This is what was happening in the mid 19th centruy. I think we could look at other points in history and even more modern scenarios for them to see that even though some things are making life easier, or maybe in their case more fun, if we cant get them then its null.

Title: Engagement

Short Answer:
I would come up with some simple everyday products that we often take for granted like shoes, maybe forks, spoons, and clothing and talk about the scarcity of the products in the Civil War and how it sloly improved.

We would also talk about how the sentiment changed from eager to war to not wanting a fraft and feeling the federal government was too controlling. We would or could use some primary sources such as local newspaper articles to look at how locals felt about the sitation.

Title: The Way of Life
Grade Level: Middle
Short Answer:
I think we would start by discussing and learning about the army, the differences between the two, how the British were professional soldiers and the Contienetal Army was everyday citizens. I think talking about camp life is important for students to paint a picture of what things were like. They tyoe of warfare is impotant for students to know. SOldiers had to know what the possibilies could be standing across from the enemy only 30 yards away taking turns firing at each other. Knowing Washingtons feelings on disciline and his thoughts on militia are important as well. Lastly, how the army was dispused at the end of the war. It was fast and efficient as soldiers turned back to citizens.
