Historical thinking is a process of thinking which allows someone to analyze artifacts from the past, maybe a document or object, and construct a meaningful observation of past events. It requires that the observer view the past from the understanding of the period not through the lens of the present .

In a nation preparing for war, making sure the troops are well fed is essential. America was in the mist of the Great Depression and times were difficult. Mobilizing a nation to fight the war was a tremendous undertaking. Providing for the men in uniform took sacrifices in placing their needs above that of the citizen back home. It also gave the men a slice of home that could keep the morale high.

The Reaper gave farmers a way to increase production. Two men can now do the work of twenty in the same amount of time. This advancement gave people time to pursue other endeavors outside of farming which lead to more people looking for work in Urban areas.

Food can help one identify with a region or culture. As companies geared up for the war effort they created various new technologies for move food from the home front to the battlefields. This also change the way Americans ate. Just as the refrigerated train cars changed eating habits, bringing new foods to the eastern markets, the technology changed diets and gave housewives more time to do other things.
